The government of India is planning to delay the compulsory use of photovoltaic cells in the solar power projects to be installed under national solar mission to provide access to the suitable technology. This may affect the suppliers like Moser Baer, SK Surya, Indo Solar, Tata BP Solar. The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission expects to increase 20,000 mw of grid-connected solar power by 2020 and the domestic modules was made compulsory in its first phase of bidding and the same on the photovoltaic cells from next fiscal.
Deepak Gupta, the MNRE secretary said they will use a clause for the photovoltaic cells after assessing the progress on projects that was bided in the first round and in case of arises the delay may take place to permit more global technologies entering into Indian market. The PV generation generates power by changing solar radiation into electricity with the help of solar cells made of semiconductors. This improvement is expected to have shaken the local companies who helped the government to support the foreign investment in manufacturing.
Ajay Prakash Shrivastava, the Maharishi Solar Technology president said the country can meet the terms to complete the solar mission with the help of quality products, so there is no requirement for permit solar PV products import. K Subramanya, CEO of Tata BP Solar said there will a 25 year power purchase agreements on the solar power projects and the government must make sure that these projects after their completion provide more power for a long period.
According to report by purchasing the domestic provision it will help in boosting the technology manufacturing in India as it has 250 mw of cell capacity in domestic market. By the 2010 end the country is expected to have 630 mw of cell capacity and 1,100 mw of module capacity and it may improve still in 2011 end to 1,100 mw cell capacity and 1,400 mw module capacity.
