New Mexico utility is all set to join federal scientists and researchers at the colleges to create a way to manage solar energy to access when it is required than only during sun shines. Public Service Company of New Mexico has received around $2 million by US Department of Energy for Prosperity Energy Storage project. The energy storage reduction is the main reason to stop the clean energy production from renewable.
Steve Willard, this projects PNM’s principal investigator said developing safe storage systems is important for PNM and other utilities. If renewable energy is used as more benefit which is capable to manage its output through batteries. Adding force on the utilities to leave the coal-fired power plants and other ways to produce electricity resulting in greenhouse gas emissions has been increasing with the latest federal proposals which may crack down the pollution.
Recently New Mexico accepted its own cap-and-trade program and the state including others have a renewable energy portfolio standard which needs utilities to supply some amount of electricity from the renewable sources. Around 60% of electricity provided by PNM to its 500,000 customers is received from coal and the PNM officials say it is one of the huge effort to join solar panels and batteries for generating electricity.
Scott Kuszmaul, Sandia National Laboratories who is working on the project said battery system may smoothen the fluctuations in power generation because if cloud covers or affected by a storm while storing power. This is required because without the storage many utilities cannot depend on the facility when sun is unavailable. Kuszmaul said it is all about battery now and the technical availability of energy storage still have to be proven which has been informed by the Department of Energy who are trying to accomplish with the projects it has been investing in.
