AUO green energy plans


The flat panel maker AU Optronics Corp who is located in Taiwan has announced that it has made an agreement with the Germany’s Evonik Industries to jointly create a green energy business. The AU Optronics Corp and Evonik Industries have signed a memorandum of understanding to manufacture and develop solar energy and also other green energy activities which have not been specified.


Both AU Optronics Corp and Evonik Industries are planning to start a business of poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) which is a complete plastic which will be recycled and that can be used as a shatterproof replacement for the glass. The other details of the partnership has not been informed yet and joining with the leading makers of specialty chemicals in the whole world Evonik, AU Optronics Corp will further improve its capabilities in the research of material and its development.


The AU Optronics Corp affiliate, Forhouse Corp has also entered into a merger with Evonik in the year 2008 to make a poly methyl methacrylate for using in TFT-LCD (thin-film transistor liquid crystal displays). The AU Optronics Corp said this joint venture is running easily so they have planned to enter into the green energy business. The merger between Evonik and Forhouse which is also called as Evonik Forhouse Optical Polymers is expecting to double the production annually by 85 kilotons in the year 2012.


At present the flat panel maker holds 90% of stake in M Setek, the silicon wafer maker located in Japan who gives control to upstream solar energy business to AU Optronics Corp. The flat panel maker also controls a Malaysian solar cell plant along with SunPower Corp. The AU Optronics Corp is one of such companies who are expanding itself into the renewable energy expecting to reduce the affect on cyclic decline on its main business.
